Noticed for his albums and comic strips for both adults and children, Simon Roussin occupies a special place in the landscape of French illustration. Since Robin Hood, published when he was still a student at Strasbourg’s Arts Décoratifs, he has been exploring the great myths that marked his youth: the figure of the hero, adventure stories, grandiose landscapes, distilling in his images frequent references to cinema. In his cheerfully impertinent way, he enjoys diverting the genre narrative and reappropriating it, alternating neat clear lines, falsely naïve felt pen drawings and sumptuous color flat tones, printed in direct tones.

For his exhibition at the Studio, Simon Roussin wished to venture into uncharted territory, producing a series of oil paintings, a technique he is experimenting here for the first time.

By freeing himself from narration codes and the space of the book, Simon Roussin imagines with Été indien an enigmatic universe presenting some forty paintings that allow each and every one to invent his own story, to make his own cinema.
