9645 magazines, 53 students, 1 artist!
Around fifty students from DSAA1 (Diplôme supérieur d’Arts Appliqués, Bac+3 level) work in Marseille, divided into 4 high schools: Saint-Exupéry (Graphic Design); Diderot (Space); Marie Curie (Events), Jean Perrin (Product Design). With their philosophy and history of arts, science and technology teachers, they explore a variety of museum issues each year: status of works in a collection, conservation, museography, etc.
This year, the project focuses on contemporary works of art, in collaboration with the Frac-Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur. Documenting Contemporary Art questions the material gathered on the works. These questions are addressed around an artist and his work that has recently entered the Frac’s collections: Francesc Ruiz, Les kiosques de Toulon (Toulon’s kiosks).
The exhibition designed for Fotokino is the first presentation of this work since its creation in Toulon and its entry into the Frac’s public collection. The exhibition will also show the work carried out by the students: meeting with the artist, data collection, hypotheses for presentation to the public.
Francesc Ruiz, selected to represent Spain at the Venice Biennale in 2015, works on urban landscape, printed objects, culture and popular images. Born in 1971, he lives and works in Barcelona. Inspired by urban images and imaginary, Francesc Ruiz thinks kiosks play a central role in cities, as a place of passage, a traffic hub and a city concentrate.
Ruiz’s overflowing installations do not aim at buildings’ reconstitution or fidelity. For him, the kiosks are the motors of a city: they inject paper, sound, still and moving images, already read books, future readings, meetings, projects. Impulsing flows of information, they are the driving force of the urban imagination.
Ruiz’s kiosks are first and foremost a source of energy, fed by a 64-page magazine designed by the artist and with a print run of 11,000 copies.
