When you go hiking in the Calanques park, you find yourself in a suspended place: between earth and sky, air and water, sea and mountain, city and nature, civilisation and wilderness, violence and tenderness, home and elsewhere… The area in itself—contradictory, mythical, liminal—seems shaped by impossible interactions. For the past 120 years, the Excursionnistes have kept on exploring, charting, circumscribing, photographing and loving this territory, trying to make it more accessible to the public, thus sharing their passion for this estranged and wild piece of land… Contradictory intentions and discrepancies, yet again.
Lines / The distance between us is a crossover research residency, involving the Fotokino Studio, the Excursionnistes and the Calanque park. Since the beginning of 2019, and through different lines of investigation, gethan&myles have explored the interactions between the four principal components of this territory: earth, sea, sky and human beings.
During the month of August, 2019, gethan&myles occupied the Fotokino Studio (located in the former Excursionnistes Marseillais headquarters) and used it as a base for exploration and creation. In September, they exhibited the results of their enquiry, within the framework of Des marches, démarches and the Rentrée de l’art contemporain.
