Kitty Crowther chose her profession, making books, as a way to create a silent work. In her studio, at the very top of her house, near the treetops, she is carried away by the images that her stroke gives birth too. She loves the magic of stories, the ones that carry you away and transform you. For her, books are open windows to the world.

Her father is English, her mother is Swedish, she lives in Brussels. With humor, Kitty Crowther remains faithful to the child she once was, the one who read Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, Tove Jansson’s The Adventures of Moomin the Troll or Hergé’s Tintin in Tibet. Her drawings and texts narrate life’s essential questions, small and big fears, the loss of a loved one, loneliness, friendship. This is why her universe also speaks to adults, even if her books are found at the centre of children’s albums in libraries and bookshops. She creates worlds on the margins of known territories, inventing characters inhabited by their love, fears and hopes, immersed in a mysterious and magical nature that takes the reader to the other side of the mirror, just like in a dream.

For Laterna magica 2013, Kitty Crowther gathered several of her travelling companions: a fantastic forest, amusing and colorful characters that we would like to have as friends, a stone that grants wishes, Poka and Mine… Original drawings and an in situ creation will also be presented at the Studio. Along with a conference and two workshops, Kitty Crowther gives us several opportunities to share her contagious energy and imagination.
